Overview

Proof of Address (PoA) collection is the process of gathering and verifying evidence of a client's residential address as part of Client Due Diligence (CDD).

Legl supports two methods of proof of address collection: automated verification and manual collection. This gives firms flexibility to choose the right approach for each client and workflow.

What you can use Proof of Address collection for

  • Verify a client's address as part of standard or enhanced CDD

  • Meet AML and KYC obligations for both UK and international clients

  • Collect address evidence for clients where database matching is unavailable

  • Support in-person onboarding as well as remote client journeys

  • Add address verification to workflows that do not include a full CDD check

How Proof of Address collection works

Legl offers two approaches to proof of address collection. These can be used independently or together, depending on your workflow and the client's circumstances.

Automated Proof of Address Verification

The client uploads a proof of address document, such as a utility bill, bank statement, or government letter, via their secure Legl link. Legl automatically analyses the document against four data checks:

  • Data Comparison: does the name and address on the document match the client's details?

  • Document Classification: is the document type supported and within the required date range for that jurisdiction?

  • Image Integrity: is the image quality sufficient for verification?

  • Source Integrity: are there any signs of tampering or forgery?

Results are returned instantly as Clear or Consider. Automated verification is available across 80+ countries and adapts dynamically to local document requirements.

ℹ️ Important

Proof of Address verificaton is a charged feature. For pricing, please contact our support team.

Manual Proof of Address Collection

For clients where automated verification is not required, or where you need to collect address evidence as part of a non-CDD workflow, Legl also supports manual collection. The client uploads a document via their Legl link, and your team reviews it directly in the platform. No automated checks are applied.

Manual collection can be added as a standalone workflow step or included within a CDD workflow.

Cost: Manual proof of address collection is free. No charge is applied when a document is collected without automated verification.

ℹ️ Important

If a client's country is not supported by automated verification, Legl will automatically fall back to manual document collection at no additional cost to your firm.

When to use each method

Method

When to use it

Automated verification

Charged

When you want Legl to analyse and verify the document automatically. Ideal for high volumes, international clients, or where additional fraud detection is required

Manual collection

Free

When you want to collect a document for your team to review, without automated checks. Suitable for lower-risk clients or workflows where a separate document review process is in place

How Proof of Address fits into your workflows

Proof of address collection can be used in several ways within Legl:

  • As part of a CDD workflow: add automated PoA verification or manual collection as a step within a Standard or Basic CDD workflow, including NFC workflows

  • As a standalone module: add proof of address as an independent step in any workflow, including those that do not include a CDD check

  • For in-person checks: complete a proof of address check in person with a client present, rather than via a remote link

ℹ️ Important

If you add a standalone Proof of Address step to a workflow that already includes automated PoA verification within a CDD step, the client will be presented with two separate proof of address steps. To avoid this, use the PoA step within the CDD workflow rather than adding it separately.

  • Accepted document types and date requirements vary by jurisdiction. Firms cannot customise which documents are accepted.

  • Proof of address verification supports AML compliance but should be used alongside other CDD checks such as identity verification, PEPs and Sanctions screening, and Source of Funds.

  • Legl does not make compliance decisions. Your firm is responsible for reviewing results and determining the appropriate next steps.
