Overview
When Engage verifies a client's address, it checks their details against trusted databases. In most cases this returns a Clear result. If the system cannot confirm the address, the result is marked as Unidentified. This article explains what that means and what to do next.
Where you will see this
The Unidentified result appears in the CDD report under the Identity Validation section.
It shows after the client has submitted their details as part of an Engage request.
The result is generated automatically by the system — it does not require any action from you to trigger it.
What this means
The Identity Check in Engage verifies a client's proof of address without requiring them to upload documents upfront. Instead, it checks their submitted name and address against the following UK-based databases:
The Electoral Roll
Credit record agencies
The phone book
At least two matches are required to return a Clear result. An Unidentified result means the system was unable to confirm the address against these databases — it does not mean the address is incorrect or that the client has failed a compliance check.
Common reasons you might see this
The address was not entered in the standard postal format
The client has recently moved and their new address is not yet on record
The client has opted out of public records such as the Electoral Roll
The client is not a UK resident
What you need to do
If you receive an Unidentified result, you should request a proof of address document from the client. Acceptable documents include:
A utility bill issued within the last 3 months
A bank statement issued within the last 3 months
Official correspondence issued within the last 3 months
You can request this by sending a new Engage request that includes a proof of address step.
What happens next
Once the client uploads a document, it will be available for your firm to review within the CDD report.
If automated Proof of Address Verification is enabled in your workflow, the uploaded document will also be screened automatically.
Your firm is responsible for reviewing the document and determining whether the address has been sufficiently verified.
Important information
Important
An Unidentified result is not a fraud flag — it means the address could not be confirmed automatically against available databases.
This check is primarily database-driven and works best for UK residents registered on public records.
Legl does not make compliance decisions. Your firm is responsible for determining whether the verification outcome is sufficient.
