A guide to Universal risk rules

The Universal risk rules that are free for every firm, what each one does, and how to turn one on.

Written by Ula Moyse-White

Overview

Universal risk rules are free for every firm. They handle common identity and proof of address issues with your client automatically, so your team does not have to chase them.

Some Universal rules are always on. Others are available for you to turn on if they suit your firm's risk policy. This guide explains each Universal rule and how to turn one on.

Where to find Universal rules

Select Governance in the left-hand menu, then Risk rules, then the Universal tab. Each rule shows what triggers it (WHEN), what Legl does (THEN), and its status:

  • Always on: the rule is already running for your firm.

  • Available: you can turn the rule on yourself.

Identity Verification

Out-of-date identity document (Always on)

When a client's identity document is out of date, then Legl automatically asks them to upload a document that is in date.

The client can upload a new document up to 2 more times (3 attempts in total). If it is still out of date, the request is marked as consider.

Treat selected reasons as clear (Available)

When the client's identity check is flagged for one of the reasons you select, then Legl treats these reasons as clear.

By default, these results are marked as consider, and they stay that way unless you turn this rule on. You can choose any of these reasons:

  • Address: Could not be validated with Credit Agencies

  • Address: Could not be validated with Telephone Database

  • Address: Could not be validated with Voting Register

  • Date of Birth: Could not be validated with Credit Agencies

  • Date of Birth: Could not be validated with Voting Register

  • Identity: Not enough independent sources matched the details provided

A request flagged only for the reasons you select reads clear instead of consider. Any other reason still marks the request as consider. Use this rule if your firm's risk policy accepts these results.

Proof of Address

Same document for both proofs of address (Always on)

When a client uploads the same document for both proofs of address, then Legl automatically asks them to upload a different document.

The client can upload a different document up to 2 more times (3 attempts in total). If it is still the same document, the request is marked as consider.

How to turn on an Available rule

  1. Go to Governance > Risk rules and select the Universal tab.

  2. Find the rule marked Available. Expand How this works to see what the rule does.

  3. Click Edit. Under Configure the rule, open the Select a value dropdown and tick the reasons you want to treat as clear.

  4. On Review and add, check the reasons you selected.

  5. Click Turn on. The rule starts working straight away.

Want rules that match your own policy?

Custom risk rules are built from your firm's own risk policy, for example flagging a PEP or sanctions match, or asking for a signed passport. They are a paid add-on.
