Overview
A Pay Request allows you to send a secure payment link to a client for a specific amount. You can pre-fill their details, add references, attach invoices, and track payment status in real time from your Pay dashboard.
You would typically use this when requesting payment for an invoice, onboarding fee, money on account, court fee, or other matter-related charges.
Before you start
You will need the client's email address to send a Pay Request.
Your firm will need at least one bank account configured in Settings > Pay before payments can be received.
How to create and send a Pay Request
1. Go to the Pay dashboard
Log in to your Legl Dashboard.
Click Pay.
Select Payments from the left-hand menu.
Click Create Pay Request at the top of the screen.
The Pay dashboard is where you can view all payment statuses, including Created, Sent, Paid, Refunded, and Transferred. You can also filter, search, and export payment data from this screen.
2. Enter your client's details
Enter the client's first name, last name, and email address.
Add a client reference (recommended for easier searching and reconciliation).
If the client already exists in your database, select them to auto-fill their details.
3. Choose the payment type
You can select:
Single payment – for a one-off payment.
Payment plan – to spread a larger amount over multiple months.
If selecting a single payment:
Enter the payment amount.
Select the correct bank account.
Add an invoice reference and/or matter reference if required.
Upload up to 10 files. You can attach invoices, timesheets, engagement letters, or other relevant documents.
Add any internal comments (visible to your team only).
Click Create Pay Request.
If selecting a payment plan:
Enter the total amount.
Enter the monthly payment amount.
Select the start date.
Choose the relevant account.
Add references or attachments as needed.
Click Create Pay Request.
ℹ️ Further guidance
For payment plans, the client enters their card details once, and payments are taken automatically each month. They receive a reminder before each payment is collected.
4. Send the Pay Request
After creating the request, it has not yet been sent.
You can:
Click Send Email to send a firm-branded email directly from Legl (sent from [email protected]).
Enable automated reminders to send after 1, 3, 7, 14, or 30 days (and continue until payment is made).
Choose to CC yourself (the client will see your email address included).
Click Copy shareable link to paste the payment link into your own email.
If you need to share the request with a third party, use the Copy shareable link option and send it manually.

What happens next
Once sent, the client receives a firm-branded email from [email protected] with a secure payment link.
The payment status on your dashboard updates in real time as it moves from Sent to Paid.
Once the client pays, they receive an automatic email receipt.
Clients can view and download any attached documents directly from the payment link.
Funds are transferred to your nominated bank account twice daily (9am and 4pm, Monday to Friday). Payments received after 4pm, or on weekends and bank holidays, are processed in the next working transfer window.
Additional payment methods (optional)
In addition to Pay Requests, Legl also supports:
Checkout links – Generic payment links you can add to invoices or your website (for example, "Pay My Bill"). Clients enter their own details and payment amount.
Phone payments – Take card payments over the phone or in person. Card details are not stored on the platform.
Payment steps in Engage workflows – Add a payment request directly into onboarding or CDD workflows (admin access required).
Important information
A Pay Request link is unique to the specific client and payment details entered.
Clients cannot edit the payment amount on a Pay Request link.
It is not possible to CC a third party directly within the Pay Request email—use the shareable link instead.
You can issue a full or partial refund or manually close a payment link from the payment screen.
To embed a checkout link on your website, contact our Support team or your Launch Manager.
