Do I need to do anything for my clients?
Do I need to do anything for my clients?
No, you do not need to take any action regarding your clients. We continuously invest into the payments experience of your clients. While there are improvements to the design of our payments page there is nothing you need to do. Your clients will also see the same text appear on their card and bank statements as before.
How will the payment experience change for my clients?
How will the payment experience change for my clients?
We understand that your clients expect a seamless experience when making payments to you. Over the coming months, our improved payment page design will put your brand more in the foreground, while retaining a smaller “powered by Legl” logo.
We’ll also improve the overall payment steps and options clients view online. We will also streamline the process for declined payments. This will help clients, who have failed to make a payment due to reasons such as insufficient funds or an invalid security code, to understand more easily whey their payment failed and how to resolve it.
While those and similar other changes are subtle, we believe our investments in the optimal client experience further contributes to the positive experience your clients associate with you.
We will manage this upgrade for you. To benefit from this change, you need to register with Adyen but there is no other action required beyond that.

Why would we receive Adyen and Stripe payouts?
Why would we receive Adyen and Stripe payouts?
During the transition phase, you might see Adyen and Stripe both sending you payouts from card payments on the same day. There can be two reasons for this: Timing overlap, and Migration dates for Payment Steps and Payment Plans.
Timing overlap:
Timing overlap:
As we introduce Same-Day Payout to your firm, you will see card payments appear in your bank account faster. But payments made prior to switching over are still paid out on your old payout schedule. That means your bank account will receive new payments from Adyen (faster payout to you) while still receiving earlier payments from Stripe (slower payout). This overlap will last a maximum of 1 week after we’ve switched your payments over to Adyen, likely less.
Migration dates:
Migration dates:
If you are using Payment Steps (as part of an automated Legl Workflow service) and/or Payment Plans you will see those being paid out to you by Stripe until 30 April 2024. Stripe will also continue to process all instalment payments for Payment Plans created before April 30. This will continue until your client has paid off all instalments or you have cancelled the Payment Plan, and your old payout schedule will apply. For new Payment Plans setup from 30 April Adyen will manage all instalment payments and payout under our new Same-Day Payout schedule.
Stronger AML Compliance
Stronger AML Compliance
AML management with card payments (June 2024)
AML management with card payments (June 2024)
Client expectations on paying by card have evolved faster than the legal industry’s approach to accepting payments. That includes the convenience for clients to pay with any card of their choosing without giving law firms more control over the associated AML risks. Coming this summer, we will enable you to manage your compliance risk on card payments more proactively.
As a first step, we will confirm the card issuer name on each payment. That’s the entity who provided the card your client is using for that payment. We will also continue to display if the card used is a debit card or a credit card. That enables you to see if a client pays using a card that is associated with an account they have provided or declared - and take action accordingly if it is not.
For example, let’s assume you’ve completed Source of Funds (SOF) and Source of Wealth (SOW) checks for a client on their HSBC bank accounts. Your client now pays via card. A debit card issued by “HSBC UK Bank PLC” appears related to those bank accounts - a debit card issued by “Nationwide Building Society” does not. And *credit* cards are never linked to bank accounts, even if they are issued by the same institution.
Knowing the card type and issuer name enables you to introduce more AML controls on your card payments. This is our first of several steps in helping you to better manage payment compliance. Customers who have registered with Adyen will automatically have access to this new service. If you’d like to learn more about this feature or be part of the Legl Product Innovation Group (Legl PIG), with early access and input to product designs and features, please get in touch with your Client Success Manager or the Legl Support Team.
CDD on Card Payments (June 2024)
CDD on Card Payments (June 2024)
It can be hard to determine who actually made the payment by card. To help you mitigate respective AML and compliance risks on card payments more proactively we will provide you with more information about the card your client used.
You will continue to see the cardholder name provided by your client when they made their payment. It will signal where someone used another person's card. For example, you might want to take further actions if a client by the name of “Jack Green” made a payment with a cardholder name of “Amber Read”. Reviewing the cardholder name is useful where there are discrepancies.
We will also start to validate the postal address your client enters during the payment process against the address their card is registered with. That means we will confirm if the country, city, postcode and address your client entered are the same as the ones their bank or card issuer has on file. Most cards in the UK support this Address Verification Service (AVS), and we request AVS results on international cards as well. That means you will be able to see the address your client provided for the payment, and if that address matched with what their bank has on file, only partially (e.g. country and city match, but not postcode and address) or not at all. In rare cases a card issuer won’t return any AVS results.
Customers who have registered with Adyen will automatically have access to this new service. If you’d like to learn more about cardholder names, AVS details or be part of the Legl Product Innovation Group (Legl PIG), with early access and input to product designs and features, please get in touch with your Client Success Manager or the Legl Support Team.
