How to complete your online ID verification

Online ID verification allows your solicitor or professional adviser to verify your identity securely using photo ID and facial recognition.

Before you start

Before beginning your ID verification, make sure you have:

  • A government-issued identity document, such as a passport, driving licence, or ID card

  • A smartphone or tablet with a working camera or a computer with a webcam (required for photo upload and video recording)

  • A modern internet browser, such as the latest version of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari

  • The secure verification link provided by your solicitor or law firm

ℹ️ The Law firm may have shared this link with you directly, or it may have come from [email protected].


How to complete your online ID verification

Click each step below to see further step by step instructions and tips.

Step 1: Open the verification link

  1. Open the secure link provided by your solicitor or click Get Started from within the email sent from [email protected].

  2. Review Legl’s Privacy Policy and Terms of Use.

  3. Click Agree and continue to begin.


Step 2: Enter your personal details

  1. Enter your details exactly as they appear on your identity document:

    • Full name

    • Contact details

    • Date of birth

    • Country of residence

    • Address

  2. If any information has been pre-filled, check that it is correct.

  3. Select Continue to proceed.

ℹ️ Important

For UK addresses:

  • Enter your postcode and select Find address

  • Choose your address from the list, or enter it manually if not found

For addresses outside the UK:

  • Enter your address manually


Step 3: Choose your document

  1. Click Start verification.

  2. Start typing the country that issued your identity document and select it from the list.

  3. Choose the document type you want to use (for example, Passport or Driver’s Licence).

ℹ️ Important

If your document type does not appear, confirm the correct issuing country is selected. If you do not have a valid document, contact your law firm for assistance.


Step 4: Take and upload a photo of your identity document

Option 1: Upload Photo (if you are using a Desktop or Laptop)

  1. Select Upload file

  2. Choose your photo from the document finder on your device

  3. Click Upload or Redo to upload a different photo

Option 2: Continue on Phone (to switch to a mobile device)

  1. Select Continue on Phone

  2. Select Get Secure Link

  3. Scan the QR Code, or choose an alternative method (Copy link, or Get link via SMS)

  4. Click Continue

  5. Allow camera access by clicking Continue then Allow

  6. Take a clear photo of your document using your device’s camera.

ℹ️ Important

Photo guidance:

  • Do not upload PDFs, scans, or photocopies

  • The photo must be:

    • In colour

    • Well-lit

    • In focus

    • Free from glare, shadows, or reflections

    • Showing all edges of the document clearly


Step 5: Record a verification video

  1. Select Record video to begin.

  2. Allow your browser access to your camera and microphone.

  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to record a short video.

  4. If successful, this will be submitted automatically.

ℹ️ Important

Video guidance, ensure you:

  • Are in a well-lit environment

  • Are fully clothed and in an appropriate environment

  • Are the only person in the video

  • Move your head from right to left to capture both side profiles


What happens next

Once submitted, your identity information is securely shared with your firm or professional adviser for review.


You do not need to take any further action unless your law firm contacts you.


Important information

  • You must use an original, valid identity document

  • Poor-quality images or videos may cause delays or rejection

  • Camera and microphone access are required to complete verification

  • If you experience issues during the process, your law firm may ask you to retry the verification


Troubleshooting

If you encounter problems during verification:

  • Ensure your camera and microphone permissions are enabled

  • Ensure you are turning your head from right to left to capture both side profiles

  • Use a supported browser and a stable internet connection

  • Make sure your ID photo is clear and well-lit

  • Try switching to a different device if issues persist
